I am not sure if it is better to buy a used tri-band phone in the US and bring it to India or just buy one there?  Can I actually get a new phone in India for cheap - around Rs.1500? Or do you really need to do a lot of shopping and negotiating? Do they sell them in airports or are the costs very much inflated there? I will have to fly to Delhi, then to Chennai, then take a train for about 8 hours.  I am a little nervous about not having a phone for all of that travel until I reach my destination where I could buy one. I could purchase a phone in Delhi's airport, however I understand that all of my calls would be "roaming" as I would no longer be in Delhi. Alternatively, I could wait until I arrive at the final destination (where I will be for several weeks) and buy a phone there.  Or, I could purchase a phone in the US and get a basic card as soon as I get the chance. I would be able to get a good used phone for about $45 USD. I would greatly appreciate any advice, experience or recommendations.
