Signing of a trilateral agreement between The
Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, UNESCO
and Udaipur Municipal Council
The Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF),
Udaipur; UNESCO India Office, New Delhi and
Udaipur Municipal Council (UMC) are hosting a
joint co-operation programme on the development
of a sustainable agenda to preserve the living
heritage of Indian cities. This programme will
run from January 01 to December 31, 2007.
The agreement was signed on December 01, 2006 at
the Collectorate, Udaipur by Ms Minja Yang,
Director - UNESCO India Office, New Delhi; Mr
Shikhar Agarwal, District Magistrate, Udaipur;
Mr Ravindra Shrimali, Chairperson - Udaipur
Municipal Council and Mr Trilok C Sharma,
Secretary - Maharana of Mewar Charitable
Foundation, Udaipur.
With the rapidly changing character of Indian
cities in today's modern world the agenda sets
out to preserve the rich cultural heritage. |

The objectives of the framework is to
1) strengthen the competence of UMC in order to
manage these rapid changes retaining the assets
of its cultural and natural resources;
2) to raise the profile of Udaipur with its
unique and diverse heritage;
3) to use the resources for the socio economic
development and benefit of the people;
4) to encourage local community participation;
5) to work on the sustainable development of
Udaipur based on the strength of their
traditions;
6) to encourage city-to-city co-operation and
networking among local government and urban
stakeholders of national and international
member cities.
The activities under the plan of action for 2007
cover the explanation of a heritage sensitive
Udaipur city development plan and the
establishment of a heritage unit within the UMC,
as well as the modalities for the implementation
of joint co-operation activities.
This joint program will help strengthen the
competence of Udaipur, its administration, civil
society and inhabitants as well as protect and
preserve the cultural and natural heritage of
this historic city. |
