The City of Udaipur

Known as the White City of Rajasthan, Udaipur is built around four man-made lakes, Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar and Swaroop Sagar. A traditionally planned walled city, huge bastions pierced with eleven gates strengthened its ramparts. Each gate was studded with iron spikes as protection against enemy war elephants. Of these only seven remain, the Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate) to the north, the Kishan Pol to the south, Delhi Gate to the north east, Chand Pol (Moon Gate), Amba Pol and Bhram Pol to the west and Suraj Pol (Sun Gate) to the east. Extending a considerable distance along the east bank of Lake Pichola is the majestic City Palace. Founded in 1559 by Udai Singh, it continued to be rebuilt and expanded upon by as many as 22 of the Maharanas who inherited it. It is made of Aravali stones, and is composed of 4 major and several minor palaces forming a single facade in a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles.
There are two islands in Lake Pichola. On the southern island is Jag Mandir, built in 1628-35 as an island retreat. Massive stone slabs line the palace walls and were once studded with rubies, onyx, jasper, cornelian and jade. Eight stone elephants guard an entrance, which once led to courtyards with painted pavilions and landscaped gardens with cascades and pools. It is here that Mughal Prince Khurram once sought refuge, before he became Emperor Shahjahan, who created the immortal Taj Mahal. Jag Niwas, now better known as the Lake Palace Hotel, is a dazzling white palace and was until 1955 the summer retreat of the Maharanas. It was built in 1746 by the young prince Jagat Singh in a fit of pique, when his father declined to let him and his friends visit his island retreat, Jag Mandir, and told him to build his own pleasure palace.

City Palace

The City Palace stands on a hill on the banks of Lake Pichola, surrounded by crenulated walls. Founded in 1559, it is composed of four major palaces and several minor palaces that form a single facade. Its main entrance is through a triple arched gate, the Tripolia, built in 1725. The gate leads to a series of courtyards, corridors and gardens. The Rajya Angan (Royal Courtyard) has a shrine, which is the oldest part of Udaipur. It is here that Udai Singh met an ascetic who suggested this site for Udaipur. The centrally located 17th century Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) gets is name from inlaid glass mosaics of peacocks on its walls. Other exotic rooms include the Krishna Vilas dedicated to the memory of a 16 year old princess's tragic suicide, the Zenana Mahal (Palace of the Queens) and the Badi (Chini) Chitrasala, which has exquisite mosaics and blue and white ceramics.
To the west of main gate lies Khush Mahal (Palace of Happiness) and to its south lies Shambhu Niwas. The third palace is Shiv Niwas now a Grand Heritage hotel. This was followed by Fateh Prakash, which is also a hotel and known for its Durbar Hall and Crystal Gallery.
